I've been writing about the exotic places on this lovely planet and I know you've all enjoyed learning about countries and cities you may be hankering to go to, but I think it's time I wrote about another, lesser know place: my home town, Angus Hat!
Saskatchewan is so flat that it's kind of hard to find places by way of landmark, so I'll just say that if you take the Trans Canada highway through here, there's a grain elevator with an abandoned Texaco station next to it. There's a dirt road heading north right near there. it's the only one that comes this way - in fact, it becomes Main Street here in Angus Hat! Stay on the dirt road for about four hundred and eighty five miles and you'll come to a big rock. The road will veer west and you'll go another three hundred and eighteen miles until you come to a clump of trees. The road will veer north and you'll go another two hundred and sixty six miles until you get to a farmhouse. Then you travel another forty four miles and you'll see the sign for Angus Hat. Then it's another hundred and seventy one miles north west and here you are! Remember to fill up your gas tank since there's no filling stations until you get here. Then you can go to Lem's filling station. He sells gas.
I was born and raised here and have been living all my sixty seven years within a ten mile radius from where I was born. What makes this place special is the people. Our city has grown quite a bit since my days here as a child. Our population boomed once they found left over dynamite under a rock. It left quite a crater. That's now the Angus Hat Recreation Park and Swimming Hole.
Another interesting site is our UFO Way Station. You may think I'm crazy but there is a well known cave (actually a large sink hole) just outside of town where strange sounds and lights appear late at night. When we go and investigate, we usually find beer bottles and cigarette butts. Coincidence?
The biggest event of the year is Butchering Day when everyone brings their animals to be slaughtered. If you are planning a trip here, then this is the time you want to come! There are all sorts of fun activities for the whole family: we have sack races, where we put a couple of kids in a sack and drag them down main street. There's even a "Casino Night" where we gamble for offal. Hope I win the kidneys!
We even have a World War two exhibit, since most of the older men here are retired Nazis. There's helmets, boots and guns - and a few maps and gold teeth. Since everyone's seen the exhibit already we just change the order of the objects every year and serve beer. Fun for all!
You'd think that would be enough but we're not done yet; we also have a music festival!
Two weekends before Butchering Day, we host our annual Angus Hat Folk Festival. It's usually the same artists every year so we just change the order up and serve beer.
You're probably wondering where I live aren't you?
I live about thirty six miles out of town on a wonderful farm my dad left me. If you're passing by, it's the one with the RV covered in logs just next to the barn.
Oh, and by the way, if you're wondering how our town got it's name, here's the story:
A fellow named Angus (I believe he was a Scotsman) thought he had lost his hat here. The local settlers and Indians looked all over and couldn't find it. The next day, Angus was ripped apart by a grizzly bear because the dear man insisted on keeping his bacon in his belt so that his friends wouldn't steal it.
Well, wouldn't you know, when they found his remains, as they were stripping the valuables off of him, they found his hat! It had been in his back pocket all along!
The settlers had to choose between Angus Hat and Bacon Belt. The rest, as they say, is history.
Well, Norv and I have to practice for the music fest. We're performing "Old Joe Crow"
on Xylophone and Mandola.
Keep on travelin'!
